A coward doesn’t play Golf. Ice the contest.

“A coward does not play Golf”-this is how a familiar phrase can now sound in a new way. And all because playing Golf on ice is only possible for those who are not afraid of the scorching icy wind and meeting with the main rivals-polar bears.

Golf on ice is a relatively young phenomenon. The first Amateur championship in this unique sport was held in 1984 in the state of Minnesota. Today, the game has thousands of fans around the world.

Since 1997, the ice Golf Championships have been held annually in Greenland, on the island of Umanak, 560 km from the Arctic circle. The fields were the Greenland fjords-large ice fields where 36 holes were drilled (stroke-play) with the expectation of 2 days of play. The perfectly white ice was marked with frost-resistant red paint. The main obstacles for players were icebergs and snow hills.

Traditionally, the umanak championship is held in March. Athletes live in Hotel Uummannag, and payment for hotel services is 1.5 thousand euros. The cost of participating in a Golf competition on ice will be about 2 thousand euros. For a complete experience, you can ride in a dog sled, rent a snowboard and equipment.

In 2014, the oldest Amateur ice Golf festival will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The beginning of this tradition was laid back in 1984 by several enthusiastic golfers from the state of Minnesota (USA), who, not waiting for the summer, decided to play Golf right on the ice-covered lake Minnetonka. This is how the Wayzata Chilly Open festival was born and is still celebrated.

For a certain time, the ice on the lake is a full-fledged Golf course. It is marked with paint and made based on one day of play of 18 holes. Unlike Umanak, the rules here are more democratic – hockey sticks are used as sticks, and professional Golf balls are preferred to heavier tennis ones.

Wayzata Chilly Open is a popular event. Every year, the festival attracts the majority of local Golf fans and tourists from all over the world. HotelIvy Minneapolis offers a comfortable place to stay during the holiday. Guests of the championship will be presented with an entertainment program and themed parties.
